Beautiful place to climb and camp! Also just a great place to visit and walk around to see all the natural rock formations. Also should check out the bluegrass festival if you are in the area at the same time
Awesome place to boulder and camp. We went on a pretty slow weekend in the Summer (probably because of the heat) and it was great. We were able to camp right next to the boulder field so after we ate breakfast in the morning we were able to get right to climbing. They have bathrooms, which are what you would expect they would be like. And there was a spigot and a couple picnic tables at our site.
My visit to Horse Pens 40 was the best experience ever. Everyone should visit the Boulder Field and the hiking trails and the staff was excellent and very helpful
It’s hard to beat the convenience of this place, relative to the quality of rock. Sufficient grocery and restaurant options in town, Solid camping in the facility, and ready crash pad rentals make it good for local travelers.
A down side is that it is not run by climbers, and climbers seem to be merely tolerated. You might have to plan around a bluegrass festival, and you should beware that you’re funneling money into a family that actively supports fundamentalist Christian and anti-gun-control causes, so square that with your conscience before booking.
I never saw this coming., what an amazing and cool space! The boulder field is very well maintained, clean, and walking paths are very well defined. You will need to get a reference guide to properly navigate the the routes from V0- up to V11(the highest grade I saw) The boulders all have such unique qualities varied height and texture. I have been told that the climbing in this one spot is only comparable to rock in FountainBleu France. We are so lucky to have this resource so close to our home. There is also a bi-yearly music festival weekend in fall and spring. While I am under the impression that the majority of the traffic is for the local boulder field the Venue is available for rent with a huge stage and barn style covered venue.
